if I had a career…

by Brenda on

I am a homeschool mom, and a part-time class coordinator for a drama program. I sometimes wish I had a job that required more hours of my day–full time, maybe. I know I’m taking for granted my time with my kids. I know I’ll regret it if I step away from this oh-so-important job. Still, I wonder, if I had a career, what kind of career would I choose?

Back in June, I took the Strengths Finder 2.0 test, along with my co-workers, to figure out how we could best serve our team. Today I analyzed those strengths. If I had a career, what kinds of things should I do? This is what my strengths are:

  1. Learner
  2. Focus
  3. Futuristic
  4. Achiever
  5. Intellection

Here’s what it said I should do:

  • Teach
  • Be a catalyst for change
  • Have a career that requires technical competency
  • Have a career that requires keeping up with constantly changing technologies and regulations.
  • Work independently, with little supervision
  • Help others set goals
  • Reject jobs that don’t fit my overall mission
  • Contribute ideas about the future
  • Surround myself with people who put my vision into motion
  • Share the logic & reality behind my visions
  • Guide or coach others
  • Set challenging goals
  • Partner with other hard workers
  • Launch new projects
  • Get involved at the front-end of projects, not projects that have already begun
  • Write!

Other suggestions for me, I should:

  • Track my learning
  • Take at least 1 academic course per year
  • Have regular quiet, reflective time
  • Have regular quiet, study time
  • Have regular quiet, thinking time
  • Give myself timelines
  • Schedule out my days
  • Write my aspirations and look at them often
  • Take time to think about the future
  • Find a friend with futuristic talents
  • Find a friend with activator talents
  • Read about technology and science
  • Measure my own productivity
  • Celebrate accomplishments
  • Continue in education
  • Keep track of personal achievements
  • Don’t skimp on quality
  • Begin or continue studies in philosophy, literature and psychology
  • Keep ideas in a diary
  • Find friends who are “big thinkers”
  • Organize discussion groups around topics I’m passionate about

It really, really fits me! With every potential career option I think of, I always ask, “Does this really matter in life?” The “Be a Catalyst for Change” part stands out to me BIG TIME. I want to do what matters and changes people…

What kind of job would that be? I’d love suggestions…I think my writing at The Well Fed Homestead was this kind of job. Individual. Challenging. Required Timelines, Learning Technology. I was Teaching, Coaching, Providing Goals for People, Being a Catalyst for Change in the World….Hmmmmm….If I were to enter a Masters’ Degree Program today, what Masters should I go for, to someday have a career that fits all of this??
